Tool measures UV exposure in water
Researchers at Duke University's Pratt School of Engineering have developed a new way to measure microbes' exposure to ultraviolet light in water, according to a Nov. 1 press release.
The microsphere dosimeter, which detects how much UV light microorganisms in fluids have been exposed to, uses fluorescent microspheres to mimic pathogenic microbes in water flowing through a UV reactor, the statement said.
By measuring the bleaching of the microspheres, the researchers can obtain precise measurements of the full distribution of UV doses ?information critical for gauging the treatment's capacity to kill disease-causing bacteria or parasites before they reach the public, the statement said.
