Carcinogen taints water in two Delaware towns
WILMINGTON, DE ?Trichloroethylene (TCE) was found in the drinking water supplies of Millsboro and Dagsboro, DE, this week, prompting a state search for a cause and responsible party, The News Journal reported on Oct. 26.
Community water supplies averaged 70 to 90 parts per billion of TCE, about 14 times higher than the federal limit for the pollutant, while some tested as high as 200 parts per billion.
According to the article, residents connected to the public water system are being told to use bottled water or alternate water supplies and to limit time showering until further notice.
The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry lists TCE as a probable carcinogen, capable of causing liver and kidney damage, immune system problems and harm to unborn children in those who drink small amounts for long periods of time, the article said.
